Tell us about your business…

I started my own business in 2008 and specialise in all aspects of marketing including PR, copywriting, reciprocal deals, email marketing and other ways to raise awareness for SME businesses products and services. I am an SME working for SMEs so I have to get results in this marketplace or I go out of business – especially in the current ‘credit-crunch’ climate. I have covered all aspects of marketing and have experienced what works and more importantly what doesn’t work! Which means – for you I know what to concentrate on and how to get the most out of any budget.

At Sore Thumb Marketing I don’t just provide advice and guidance, I also provide a hands-on service and the flexibility for ‘task specific’ help when clients need it. I don’t call myself an ‘agency’ or ‘consultancy’ as these imply I have swish corporate offices with account handlers and the fees which usually accompany them. I’m an unpretentious company and can communicate your brand and proposition to your key audience without any large overheads to pass on. I treat every project, however large or small, with the same enthusiasm and dedication. I also strive to over-deliver on the value you receive, so you realise the benefit of continuing to work with me on an on-going basis.

Why did you become Self-Employed?
 I have over 30 years of marketing and PR experience having spent 17 of those years working for Boots and 3 years working for a small publishing company which provided a good insight in making budgets work hard, as well as enabling me to provide marketing advice to the 400+ franchisees of the business – all sole traders.
I decided to take my experience and expertise and set up my own PR and marketing business and now offer support for businesses like those in Biz Ex, to help raise awareness and grow sales.

What do you like about running your own business?
I really enjoy the variety my work offers me and of course the flexibility is fantastic too. I’ve been able to offer a days work for a small start up company that wanted innovative, low /nil cost marketing ideas, through to ongoing monthly PR support for many clients, some of which I work for remotely and others at their premises. I particularly enjoy PR as its a low cost way of raising awareness of products and services, and its great to see clients benefiting from sales as a result of this coverage.

Why did you decided to become an NBV Biz Ex member?
It is a great way to meet other people, share ideas and learn from the presentations too.

What do you enjoy most about the Biz Ex Networking events?
I do enjoy giving talks at the networking events as it’s great to share tips and ideas to help fellow Biz Ex members.
