How Tasneem grew her Vegan and Gluten Free Desserts business with Start & Grow

The business idea:

Tasneem Dakri approached NBV in January 2016 for support in establishing a vegan and gluten free desserts business. As a coeliac sufferer, Tasneem spotted a gap in the market for desserts that are suitable for a raw gluten free diet.
NBV provided Tasneem with her business adviser, Gau Naik, who is working with her via the Start & Grow scheme to refine her plans into a viable business.

The Challenges

So far, one to one support from her NBV adviser provided Tasneem with the skills she lacked to develop a sustainable financial structure for her business.
Tailored support and advice made it clear to Tasneem that her fledgling business was close to making a loss. The ongoing support from her NBV adviser has enabled her to develop a new pricing structure to make her business sustainable.

Programme impact

Revising her financial plans has given Tasneem the confidence to approach retailers and suppliers to sell her vegan and gluten free desserts. She is currently supplying her desserts to two local retailers and has further meetings booked, as well as stalls at regional food fairs.
The success so far has spurred Tasneem on to develop a labelled product that retailers can sell directly to customers in their shops.
Her future plans include renting a unit to make her vegan products, recruiting an apprentice to support manufacturing or delivery and buying a refrigerated van to deliver her vegan and gluten free desserts all over the UK.
